In this episode of Shaping Your Retirement, Leslie Mizerak talks with Robin Lezotte, a recent retiree who spent 26 years at job she truly loved.
Robin retired on April 30, which also happened to be her birthday. What could have been a simple final day at work became a deeply emotional celebration filled with cards, hugs, memories, and a surprise dinner planned by her husband and daughter. But after the celebrations ended, a quieter and more complicated set of emotions began to surface.
In this honest conversation, Robin shares what the first month of retirement has really felt like. She talks about the joy of being recognized, the grief of leaving a beloved team, the sudden loss of daily structure, and the surprising panic of waking up and wondering, “Now what do I do?”
Leslie and Robin explore the emotional transition that often comes with retirement, especially for people whose identity, purpose, and social connection have been deeply tied to meaningful work. Robin reflects on the importance of thinking about your “why” before retirement, staying connected to former colleagues, making room for experimentation, and allowing this next chapter to unfold without rushing into all the answers.
This episode is a beautiful reminder that retirement is not simply about stopping work. It is about reshaping your identity, your relationships, your rhythms, and your sense of purpose.
As Robin shares, “Retirement is not the end of the road. It is the beginning of the open highway.”

What Road Trips Reveal About Who You Are Now | Shaping Your Retirement
Monday Jun 08, 2026
Monday Jun 08, 2026
Road trips have a way of stripping away routine, role, and expectation.
In this short commentary episode, Leslie Mizerak explores how time on the open road can reveal something important about who you are now, especially in retirement. When the usual schedule disappears, what you choose, how you respond, and what you notice can become clues to what matters most in this chapter.
Even in retirement, people often recreate routine quickly because structure feels familiar and safe.
A road trip interrupts that structure and creates space to notice who you are when no one is expecting anything from you.
Travel delays, missed exits, bad weather, and closed restaurants can reveal how you respond when life does not go according to plan.
Retirement is not only about having more time. It is about learning to trust what your own choices are trying to tell you.

The Emotions Nobody Warns You About in Retirement | Shaping Your Retirement
Wednesday Jun 03, 2026
Wednesday Jun 03, 2026
Retirement is often described as freedom, but freedom is not the only feeling that can show up.
In this mini episode of Shaping Your Retirement, Leslie Mizerak talks about the emotions many people do not expect in retirement, including grief, anxiety, loneliness, and the strange disorientation that can come when a long career ends.
These feelings do not mean retirement was the wrong choice. They may mean that your work, your relationships, your routines, and your identity mattered.
This episode offers a compassionate look at why relief and grief can exist at the same time, why anxiety can emerge even when everything seems fine, and why loneliness can appear even when you are not technically alone.
The emotions that surprise you in retirement are not permanent. They are signals pointing toward what may need to be rebuilt: structure, connection, belonging, and a new sense of self.

What You Miss About Work: Being Needed
Monday Jun 01, 2026
Monday Jun 01, 2026
Retirement can feel unexpectedly quiet when the daily need for your input, judgment, and presence suddenly disappears.
In this short commentary episode, Leslie explores the emotional shift from being constantly needed at work to feeling unseen in retirement. The episode reframes that quiet not only as a loss, but as an invitation to turn attention inward and ask what you need now.

The Couples' Conversation Nobody Has Before Retirement
Thursday May 28, 2026
Thursday May 28, 2026
Many couples prepare carefully for the financial side of retirement. They talk about savings, budgets, timing, travel, and where they might live.
But far fewer couples talk about what daily life will actually look like once one or both partners are home more often.
This is not a conversation only for couples in trouble. Even strong, loving, committed partnerships can feel the strain of sudden togetherness, especially when each person has unspoken assumptions about how retirement “should” look.
For more conversations about the life side of retirement, visit Shaping Your Retirement.
And remember: This is not your grandparents’ retirement.
The episode invites couples to talk honestly and proactively about where their visions overlap, and where they may need separate lanes.

The Difference Between Staying Busy and Living with Purpose in Retirement
Thursday May 28, 2026
Thursday May 28, 2026
Retirement can be surprisingly busy. There may be grandchildren to see, hobbies to enjoy, trips to plan, committees to join, and long-delayed projects to finally tackle.
But a full calendar does not always equal a fulfilling life.
In this short commentary episode, we explore the quiet restlessness that can show up in retirement, even when life looks active from the outside. That feeling is not necessarily ingratitude, boredom, or failure. It may be a signal that your days are full of activity but not yet connected to a deeper sense of meaning.
Busy fills time. Purpose makes time feel worth filling.
